Consumption of dietary sugars has increased, while the consumption of
dietary fat has decreased within the past few years. Reducing the fat
in our diets has resulted in replacing those fats with sugars. "Fat-free"
packaged foods in the supermarkets have gotten the false image of "Diet
foods." Nothing could be further from the scientific truth.
As sugars and carbohydrates filled the empty space that fats left in
packaged foods, their fat-storing properties increased dramatically.
Manufacturers rushed to remove the fats from
their prepared foods and re-engineered them into fat-free, more "healthy"
foods. The irony is that the fats in the foods are not as fattening as the
sugars which have replaced them.
As a result, many of the "Fat-free" foods are actually much more fattening
than they were before the fat was removed!
The sugars and carbohydrate-sugars that replaced the fats are typically
high glycemic, meaning they elevate insulin and stimulate storage of
fat. Names like
- maltodextrins
- glucose and glucose polymers
- invert sugar
- dextrose
and healthy sounding sugars like
- raw sugar
- honey
- brown sugar
- barley
malt
- date sugar
- cane sugar
- maple sugar
- caramelized
sugar and
- blackstrap molasses
have one thing in common.
They are fattening. They can also elevate blood sugar, which
has driven the incidence of Type II diabetes to epidemic proportions.
The average Australian eats over 70 kilos of white sugar every year, which
represents 20 to 25% of our daily caloric intake. Sucrose, common table
sugar does not contain vitamins, minerals or fibre and in 20% of the
population, sucrose will increase the risk of heart disease due to
elevated serum triglycerids (fat). Studies have also confirmed the
correlation between high sugar intake and increased risk of diabetes.
In addition to its contribution to obesity, diabetes, hyperactivity and
other disorders, sugar can also predispose the body to yeast infections,
aggravate some types of arthritis and asthma and
cause tooth decay. Eating excess sugar can also contribute to depression
and other mood disorders.
Aspartame sugar substitutes,
the technical name for the brand names, NutraSweet, Equal, and others
can cause worrying symptoms from memory loss to
brain tumours. Despite US FDA approval as a 'safe' food additive,
aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous
substance on the market that is added to foods.
Three of the independent organizations that track aspartame caused health
problems are given below. Please contact these organizations for more information.

Aspartame accounts for
over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the
US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many of these reactions are very
serious including seizures and death as disclosed in a February
1994 Department of Health and Human Services Report. A few of the 90
different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by
aspartame include:
Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea,
numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain,
rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision
problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety
attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss,
and joint pain.
According to researchers and physicians studying the
adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be
triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:
Brain tumors, multiple
sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease,
alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia,
and diabetes.
